Welcome to the website of the National Education Union in East Sussex
The National Education Union is a newly-formed teaching union which is the result of the merger between the National Union of Teachers and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.
The East Sussex County Branch of the NEU is responsible for representing members in negotiation with the Education Department and school and college governing bodies. We have access to advice and support from the Regional Secretary and her team at the Regional Office, which includes a solicitor and from headquarters staff.
The Branch is made up of two local districts through which teachers join the Union and become part of the East Sussex and national membership. These are the Hastings and District and the Lewes, Eastbourne and Wealden Districts.
Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney are joint General Secretaries of the newly formed National Education Union.
Prior to the merger of their respective unions in September 2017, Mary was General Secretary of the Association of Teacher and Lecturers, while Kevin led the National Union of Teachers.
There will be an 18-month transition period during which Mary and Kevin intend to stay as co-leaders until a single NEU general secretary is elected in 2023, when they have agreed to stand down.
